ster vector project

Show where a steering artifact moves the model's states at one layer: every side of a pair set read with and without it, projected onto the principal components of the unsteered reads.

Usage#

text
ster vector project --model <MODEL> --pairs <PAIRS> --vector <VECTOR> --layer <L> --strength <S> --components <N> [--revision <REVISION>] [--device <DEVICE>] [--chat-template <auto|off>] [--precision <f32|f16|bf16>]

The picture wisent's steering-viz drew, as numbers a caller can plot or check. Every side of every pair is read at --layer twice: unsteered, and with the artifact added at --strength at every layer it carries. Both reads are projected onto the first --components principal components of the unsteered reads. Ster chooses none of the three numbers. A read at a layer is taken before that layer's own vector is added, so the movement it shows comes from the vectors at the layers before it. --pairs may be omitted to use the active imported set.

What it reports#

  • points — one entry per side and read: pair (index in the set), side (positive or negative), steered, and coordinates, strongest component first.
  • explained — the share of the unsteered reads' variance each component carries; fewer entries than asked for when the reads span fewer directions.
  • shift_along_direction — the mean movement of every read along the artifact's unit direction at --layer, steered minus unsteered; null when the artifact carries no vector at that layer.
  • negative_distance_to_positive — the mean distance of the negative sides from the mean unsteered positive side, unsteered and steered.
  • negatives_moved_toward_positive — the share of negative sides steering brought nearer that mean.
  • chat_template — what this run encoded in.

Desktop request#

ster request vector/project takes pairs, vector, layer, strength, components with the shared model fields, chatTemplate and precision, and returns the same document. Ster Desktop runs it from the Project workflow.

Refusals#

SentenceCause
layer <L> is outside the model's 0..<LAST> range--layer past the model's last layer.
error: invalid value '0' for '--components <COMPONENTS>'No components; a usage error, exit 2.
artifact was trained for model <A>, current model is <M>The artifact belongs to another model; artifact width <W> does not match model width <W> for another width.
the unsteered reads at layer <L> do not vary, so they have no component to project ontoEvery side reads the same state.
missing field \strength\``The desktop request names no strength; refused with status 2 before anything loads.
